12/25/2022 0 Comments Barbarian with dino pets![]() Consider at some point doing a timeskip and just having the companion animal get bigger, probably when you go up a tier of play. Something to note is that it's hard for animal companions to sort of remain relevant as you go up in level. In that particular circumstance, I would probably add some homebrew ability that his animal companion rages with him, gaining whatever bonuses he gets, notably rage damage and resistance. These wild animals would be especially fitting if they go with a totem barbarian. This works with a lot of wild animals, so also consider a wolf perhaps. ![]() Then, just say that he gets along with it and starts feeding it, and at some point it just trusts him enough to act as an animal companion. Maybe if they're out in the countryside, you can have some wild boar be drawn to him, maybe because he's a messy eater or something, which can be done during several long rests in the wild. A bit less balanced perhaps, but cool, might be a hunting falcon?) (If he's a half-orc, I guess it can be a baby worg, which would also be cool. His colleague can tell him that they don't really want to adventure anymore, maybe due to meeting someone they want to settle down with or a vital injury, and thus entrusts the dog to him. If he's been a soldier before, then you can have him run into an old colleague that's traveling with the guard dog that they were assigned a long time ago. If you're looking for a story hook, then sure, I can offer some: Hopefully as they level up the Mastiff will be in more and more danger of getting obliterated and they'll leave it at home.ĭo not double the Barbarian's action economy for free.Īre you worried about how you can give this pet to him? Because a DM can just do that, so it shouldn't be a matter of agency. So the Mastiff can engage a single target (maybe at random or whoever's closest) and use Help for the next attacker. Think of what trained dogs do in our world. Again, he's not a Beast Master, it's not a familiar and he's not getting a different class' feature for free. If he wants to try and tame a Worg or something, make it a long process that he needs to look into - remember that more powerful dog-like creatures are pretty dang smart (Worgs have 7 INT and can speak Common). Again, this is basically another class' main feature bolted on for free. If they're just starting maybe let them have a dog, Mastiff statblock.īe very careful of just giving them a 3rd level different class feature for free, other players will notice and be pissed off that either they weren't crazy enough to ask for it or think it's unfair to do so.ĭo not allow the dog to level up with the player, or let him swap it out for bigger, stronger dogs as he goes. ![]() (I'm sure there's tons of other nefarious/cool ideas this community can come up with.) It can be an informant for the big bad, it can try to corrupt the PC for the Abyss/Hells, etc etc. This way, you can turn it into a plot device later. ![]() ![]() Imps and Quasits can both turn invisible, so that shouldn't be hard. It remains in its animal form and otherwise seems to just be a quite intelligent version of it (surprise the player with the amount of understanding from their 'pet'), but it might sneak away at times. What you won't tell them, however, is that the creature is secretly either an Imp or Quasit, depending on what 'animal' the player picks. Your player may eventually take the Magic Initiate feat for Find Familiar to "unlock the creature's full potential" (as well as two bonus cantrips), but that's your player's choice.ģ) Super Secret DM option: Have your player pick from bat/centipede/toad/rat/raven/spider and treat it as above. That way the whole situation stays balanced. Treat it as a normal animal that may be taught a trick or two with Animal Handling, but won't take any part in battle (1hp!). Give them a tiny REGULAR animal of choice from the list of familiars. Boring answer, RAW: Magic Initiate feat for Find Familiar and two cantrips, or multiclass to Ranger or Pact o/t Chain Warlock. ![]()
